The Paramount Chief of Shai Traditional Area, Nene Nagai Kassa VIII has appealed to journalists to consider giving prominence to coverage of developmental issues and tone down on politics which has dominated the media space.
“I’m saying that there are a lot of developmental stories around the regions and districts in Ghana so journalists should try and bring a lot more on those stories so that at least the people will get to know about them instead of the extensive reportage on political stories,” Nene Nagai Kassa VIII stressed.
He made the call in an interview with journalists on the sideline of the launch of Ghanata Senior High School's 80th Anniversary and the 2015 Homecoming launch at Dodowa in Accra.
Activities lined up for the Ghanata’s 80th anniversary celebration and 2015 Homecoming include dinner dance, health walk and other interesting activities. The anniversary slated for November 2016 is on the theme: "celebrating Ghanata's 80 years contribution to academic excellence and national development through discipline".
Nene Nagai Kassa VIII, addressing the launch, called on the old students association to contribute both kind and cash to support development projects in the school.
“It is our duty as Ghanata Old students to put life in the school by supporting it to develop. Ghanata needs our presence; cash; skills plus whatever is required to grow therefore let’s put our shoulders to the wheel and support our alma matter for a better future of our children” Nene Nagai Kassa VIII, who is also an old students of Ghanata School said.
Benjamin Kwami Apperkon, Headmaster of the School, called for more support from all the old students as well as philanthropists and corporate organizations in the country.
He mentioned that the school lacks accommodation to house about 165 teaching and non-teaching staffs, a generator (plant), and a fence to be constructed around the school.
“With the increase in school population, there’s the need to expand the dining hall so that all students can enter at once and in order to abolish the shift system of feeding in the school,” Benjamin Apperkon appealed.
A 5-member committee was sworn into office to raise funds towards a successful implementation of the various projects by the school.
The Ghanata Senior High School formerly known as Gold Coast People’s College was founded in 1936 at Adidome in the Volta Region by Reverend Doe Osabutey –Aguedze, and was taken over by the government in 1953.
It was then moved from Adidome to Ada in 1941 still bearing the old name as Gold Coast People’s College which was later moved from Ada to Dodowa (Greater Accra Region) in 1945. However, in 1957 after the Independence of Ghana, the name Gold Coast People’s College was changed to Ghanata Secondary School.
Ghanata Senior High School is currently a mixed-boarding school with a population of 1,840 students, made up of 940 girls and 900 girls offering courses in General Arts, visual Arts, Home Economics and Science.
