Flagbearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on President Akufo-Addo to refrain from what he described as knee-jerk promises in his approach towards finding solutions to the country’s problems.
According to the former President, Ghana would have been in a good position to create a congenial environment, in terms of health facilities, to combat the novel coronavirus pandemic if the government had a "well-thought-through and coordinated plan."
His comments come on the back of government’s announcement last Sunday that some 88 health facilities will be built in districts across the country.
Many have criticised the decision, questioning why new facilities are scheduled to be constructed while ongoing projects by previous administrations have stalled.
But Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, has said the administration has never abandoned health facilities started under the erstwhile government led by John Mahama.
The Coalition of NGOs in Health said it has also uncovered about 53 health projects across the country left unattended to, since the assumption of the Nana Akufo-Addo led administration and called for their completion.
In a televised address on Thursday, John Mahama encouraged President Akufo-Addo to focus on a plan that is credible “and clearly thought-through.”
“What we should avoid is knee-jerk promises that appear reactive rather than a product of critical thinking and well-coordinated response to existing or emerging problems,” he said on April 30.
He further added that “considering the rather tall list of his [Akufo-Addo] unfulfilled or poorly implemented promises from yesteryears, I believe in a well-thought-out and forward-looking agenda which ensures further strategic investment in our health sector to meet contemporary and future challenges.”
