United States of America-based baseball club, New York Mets has invited six Ghanaians for this year’s Spring Training as part of efforts to develop the sport in the country.
The 12-day event is scheduled for Florida, USA from March 25, to April 8.
Debbie Grieser, Regional Controller of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) said this when the delegation called on the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Sports Council (NSC) on Friday.
The six are made up of three players, Mawuli Adjanor, Daniel Atiemo and Emmanuel Boafo whose selection was based on their performance at a baseball clinic recently held at the Tema Community Seven Park during the visit of the New York Mets team to Ghana last month.
The others are Hugo Huppenbaur, coach of the Baseball team who will double as the leader of the delegation, Cephas Adonoo, chaperon of the team and Prince Annan, a Journalist.
Coach Huppenbaur will stay on for another week to attend a Baseball Convention and seminar aimed at educating prospective coaches on the latest trends of the sport.
The trip which will cost the team almost 14,000 dollars will be jointly sponsored by the New York Mets and the African Development Foundation (ADF).
Chris Hodges, Public Affairs Manager of the US Embassy in Accra said the trip will enhance and consolidate friendship between the two countries.
He added that it will help the nation to unearth more talents in the sport.
The six member team is scheduled to leave for the US on Sunday.
