Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah has urged the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to resolve lingering disputes over officer promotions within the Ghana Police Service.
His comments follow the removal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as IGP and the appointment of COP Yohuno as his successor.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, COP Mensah alleged that the outgoing IGP presided over a flawed promotion system, which saw undeserving officers promoted at the expense of others, leading to stagnation and frustration within the service.
According to him, this issue formed part of the internal tensions within the police service, and for this reason, he supports the decision to remove Dr. Dampare from office.
"We are praying that Mr Yohuno will come and correct all these promotion difficulties where junior officers will be promoted over and above their seniors without any reasonable evidence showing that they have done something better than anybody," he said on Friday, March 14.
Several aggrieved officers have already taken legal action, challenging what they describe as unfair denial of promotions under Dr. Dampare’s administration.
They argue that despite their qualifications and years of service, their career progression was blocked.
On the back of this, COP Mensah stressed the need for the new IGP to prioritise fairness and transparency in the promotion process to restore trust and morale among officers.
He emphasized that addressing these internal grievances would be crucial to ensuring effective leadership and discipline within the Ghana Police Service.
"I know Yohuno will do that, I trust him," he added.
