A Director of the Ghana Prisons Service in-charge of Finance and Administration, Mrs. Matilda Baffour-Awuah has attributed the vicious cycle of crime in society to the reluctance of the public to welcome ex-convicts into their fold. She explained that negative attitudes towards prisoners, had the propensity to harden criminals to perpetuate crime in society. Mrs. Baffour-Awuah made this observation at the inaugural ceremony of the Kwegyir Aggrey Hall Reformers Cadet Corps of the University of Education, Winneba. The Cadet Corps is made up of women from the Kwegyir Aggrey Hall of the University whose major pre-occupation is to assist the Ghana Prisons Service in its mission to reform and reconstruct the lives of prisoners. Mrs. Baffour-Awuah noted that the formation of cadet corps is normally associated with the police and the military, adding that, the formation of the female cadet corps in honour of the Ghana Prisons Service has brought an innovation to the Prisons Service. She paid glowing tribute to the head of the Winneba Prisons, Chief Superintendent of Prisons, Mr. Jacob Tagoe, and a retired Assistant Director of Prisons and current head of security of the University of Education, Winneba, Mr. Francis Bluwey Aggrey and the Manageress of the Aggrey Hall, Miss. Joyce Adams as the brains behind the female Reformers Cadet Corps. The Director said, under the criminal justice delivery system, the Prison Service must provide safe custody as well as training programmes and services which will help to transform the lives of prisoners to be responsible and law-abiding in society. She urged the female Reformers Cadet Corps to let their conduct reflect that of the Prison Service and be good ambassadors and reminded society to embrace prisoners into their communities as the prison service is poised to train inmates in literacy, vocational, moral and spiritual education. Mrs. Baffour-Awuah commended them and appealed to the officer in-charge of the Winneba Prisons to train and equip them to face the challenges ahead. Source: GNA
