Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has defended the actions of individuals alleged to be party supporters, who have been accused of vandalising state properties and attacking public institutions.
According to him, these actions were aimed at safeguarding state assets rather than engaging in unlawful acts of violence.
Speaking to Citi FM on Wednesday, 8 January, Mr Gbande clarified that the party was committed to restoring calm and working with law enforcement to address the situation constructively.
He noted that the NDC was collaborating closely with the police and other stakeholders to ensure that law and order prevailed.
“The young people of this country are determined to change the narrative, where government property and funds are stolen with impunity,” Mr Gbande stated.
“It is unfortunate, but I think we should appreciate those who are sacrificing to preserve and protect state property.”
He further argued that the allegations of theft were unwarranted, emphasising that the individuals in question were not stealing but rather safeguarding assets that could potentially be misappropriated by outgoing government officials.
“If they were stealing and taking these assets home, that would be a different matter,” he remarked.
“However, if they are moving to protect state assets from being taken away by government officials, then it is a situation that the party has recognised and is addressing.”
Mr Gbande assured the public that the NDC had taken the matter seriously and was actively engaging with the Inspector General of Police to regularise the situation.
He also mentioned that the party was working with certain individuals from the previous government who were still in office to help bring stability to the situation.
The Deputy General Secretary reiterated the party’s commitment to resolving the issue peacefully while maintaining accountability.
“We are dealing with this in a manner that ensures the protection of state assets and upholds the rule of law,” Mr Gbande concluded.
