The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo, has joined the National Peace Council in urging the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reconsider its decision not to sign the peace pact ahead of the December election.
He noted that the nation seeks peace before, during, and after the elections, making the signing of the peace pact highly important.
On Tuesday, September 17, the NDC organised a nationwide demonstration in protest of the Electoral Commission’s refusal to allow a forensic audit of the voter’s register.
The NDC has also declined to sign the peace pact and stated that it will not commit to any such agreement ahead of the 2024 general elections unless certain conditions are met.
Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show, Dr Boafo said, "We join arms with the Peace Council to implore, or ask, the NDC to reconsider their stance because all we are aiming for, come December—before, during, and after—is peace. So, if the major political party that should contribute to this peace process says they will not sign, it becomes a matter of concern."
Dr Boafo urged all stakeholders to come together to safeguard the peace and democracy of the country.
He expressed concern about the situation and called on the NDC to reconsider their position to help reduce the current tensions.
"It calls for all of us to sit down and find ways to safeguard our democracy and peace and to strengthen it as we have seen over time. So, it is something concerning, and we are all asking the NDC to reconsider their position so that we can move away from the heightened tension we are currently facing."
