The National Democratic Congress says it is now ready to participate in a proposed peace consultation with the NPP.
This was contained in a statement issued by the office of the presidential candidate of the NDC, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills.
This position appears to be a shift from the party’s earlier stance.
When the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Peter Mac Manu first proposed a peace initiative led by the two parties, the General Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia rejected the call.
He said the NDC was not ready to be part of any peace process initiated by the NPP unless perpetrators of the Gushiegu and Tamale violence were prosecuted.
He doubted the genuineness and commitment of the NPP to peace.
But the Communications Director of the NDC, Ms Hannah Tetteh says Prof. Mills is prepared to participate in the peace talks.
She told Joy News that the NDC flag-bearer believes that the peace consultation is good for the country.
Still related to this, the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Fred Deegbe says the numerous peace calls should not be viewed as an unnecessary hype.
He was reacting to comments by the Inspector-General of Police, Patrick Acheampong that the many peace calls constitute too much hype of the security situation in the country.
But Rev. Deegbe says although the calls do not necessarily solve all problems, the efforts cannot be said to be useless.
