The Member of Parliament for Hohoe North, Mr. Prince Jacob Hayibor, has blamed metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies for their corporate failure to disburse funds allotted to rehabilitate the physically challenged in the society, thereby compounding their plight.
He said two to five percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) has been earmarked towards the rehabilitation and development of the disabled in the society, which had always been flouted with impunity.
Mr. Hayibor was speaking at the inauguration and fundraising ceremony of the Hohoe branch of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) at Hohoe.
It was themed: "Remove the Social Barriers and Tap the Potentials of the People With Disabilities (PWDs).”
He said this phenomenon was an aberration of the directive from government that could be a recipe for legal confrontation.
Mr. Hayibor called for strict compliance of the provisions that enjoined district assemblies to disburse such resources for the upkeep of PWDs.
The Vice-Chairman of the Volta Regional GSPD, Mr. Stephen Dentsui, appealed to the government to establish a blueprint for the utilization of funds allocated towards empowering PWDs.
The Hohoe District Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Mr. Sitso Mawuena, commended the group for their resolve to succeed in spite of the myriads of challenges.
Mr. Isaac Sesenu, Hohoe District Officer of GSPD, said the passage of the disability law had placed a lot of responsibility on government and society at large and called for collaboration with stakeholders to enable them contribute their quota towards nation building.
