Dr. Konadu Apraku, Campaign Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, has descended heavily on the National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as political grouping which has no vision and ideas.
According to him, the country almost perished under the administration of the opposition party, led by former President Jerry John Rawlings, adding that "where there is no vision nations perish".
Speaking to The Crusading Guide yesterday at the party's campaign office in Accra, the campaign director described claims by the NDC that it cared for the country as false, and challenged the opposition to prove or mention any policy it initiated to help mitigate the suffering of Ghanaians.
"I am challenging them to name one policy they initiated to show that they are caring. It is very clear that we have done much, the NHIS, Metro Mass Transport which is free for school children, the School Feeding Programme and many more, we have a lot to talk about", Dr. Apraku charged.
He continued that the NDC was increasingly becoming insignificant in the country's developmental agenda, referring to the rather cynical view they take with respect to issues pertaining to the development of the country.
Dr. Apraku described NDC's Professor John Evans Atta Mills as one who lacked vision. He recalled a publication in the October 9, 2000 edition of the Daily Graphic newspaper where the latter reportedly said during the launch of his party's campaign that free education and health were impossible.
The newspaper reported that:
"Professor J.E.A. Mills, the Vice President urged party supporters to be wary of politicians who promise them free' education and health since it is not possible".
The campaign director and one time flag bearer hopeful of the NPP said Ghanaians were discerning enough to read in between the lines, measure the achievements of the two governments and judge for themselves which was best fit to lead the nation.
"The NDC can keep crying and screaming, and we will leave them behind; we are focusing on issues so we have decided to ignore them", he said.
The NPP guru argued that besides Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, no government in the country's history could match the NPP in terms of infrastructural developments, adding that "Nkrumah was able to do what he did because he inherited a lot of money after independence, but although we inherited nothing we were able to initiate moves to cancel our debts."
Touching on the issue of the selection of a running mate for the party's flag bearer, Dr. Apraku decried the ongoing propaganda and overt lobbying embarked upon by supporters of some of the personalities whose names have popped up for the job.
He said carrying placards to campaign for any of these personalities amounted to blackmail, adding that "nobody run for Vice President, you are selected. I think it is annoying to carry placards to campaign for anyone.
When asked to comment on newspaper publications and predictions of a possible running mate and also the kind of factors that should go into the party's selection, he answered that "newspapers don't make decision for us. The party in selecting a running mate will consider gender, ethnicity, religion and competence".
Very optimistic about the NPP's chances in the forthcoming election, Dr. Apraku told this reporter that his party would certainly break a 50 percent barrier in some places in the three Northern Regions as the people had realized the lies, contradictions and misinformation of the NDC.
"We won't play the ostrich and pretend that there are no problems, but what we are saying is that when the chips are down we will know that Ghanaians are intelligent", Apraku stated.
