The committee put together by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed satisfaction that, some of its suggestions to contain the spread of the coronavirus, have been included in the government’s intervention programme.
Chair of the committee, Prosper Bani told JoyNews Anchor, Emefa Apawu in an interview that, the initiative by the former President, John Mahama, to put together a team of experts to contribute to efforts to alleviate the suffering of persons hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, stemmed from a meeting between government officials and leadership of the political parties.
“And in that meeting, Minister for Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah requested us to go out there and contribute…because political parties are the most mobilised group of people in this country today and that people listen to their political leaders more than anything else,” Mr. Bani noted.
The government as part of the Covid-19 Alleviation Programme (CAP), is distributing free meals to over 400,000 Ghanaians in areas under lockdown- Accra, Kasoa, Tema and Kumasi.
In addition, the government has put in place a GH¢600 million soft loan scheme with a two-year repayment plan for micro, small and medium scale businesses.
The 2020 flagbearer of the opposition party, John Mahama, has also been making donations to institutions leading the fight against the spread of the viral infection the country. He recently donated relief items and food to some 20,000 vulnerable households across the country.
These supports, the former Chief of Staff noted, are being done purely on humanitarian grounds irrespective of the beneficiaries’ ethnic, political or religious leanings.
“So you can see that this committee and the subsequent activities of the committee are consistent with the call by the political leadership to bring every Ghanaian together and not to look at anybody’s turn of contribution as political or religious or ethnic,” he added.
