The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that the Electoral Commission (EC) has bloated the provisional voter’s register of the Ho Central Constituency in the Volta Region with over 4,000 names.
The Ho Central NDC IT and Election Director, Dr Collins Nunyonameh explained that the alleged illegal act was done under the guise of transfer of votes.
Addressing a press conference in Ho, he called on the EC to do the needful and ensure it provides a credible register for the elections in December.
Dr Nunyonameh further noted that the party was shocked to learn that 5,659 names were contained in the transfer list provided to the NDC by the EC during the voter's register exhibition exercise, against the 1,567 transferred names indicated in the summary report collated in June 2024.
“We need answers in terms of what exactly accounts for this. If you do the mathematics between the number that is here, this is the total number of transfers that we did, and it had 1,567. If you deduct 1,567 from the 5659 what we have is 4,092.
“Where are the 4,092 people? Which polling station, I mean, how is this number generated? So, I believe that we need some answers, and the answers have to come very quickly”, he said.
He said their investigations revealed that the election organizing body increased the number of voters exempted from 102 to 291, in the Ho Central Constituency.
Dr Nunyonameh explained that their records indicate 214 registered voters were challenged during the limited and mop-up voter registration exercises, out of which 112 had been cleared.
“The difference between that list and the one [provisional register] that was given to us by the EC is 82. That is assuming that there was not anybody cleared. So that is 82 extra beyond the total that was actually challenged.
“Now, be minded that we have actually cleared more than half of these people. So, in fact, the one that is outstanding is 102 people that we didn't clear, so where is the 291 coming from?
“So, I think that the EC has to do what it has to do. It has to find some reasonable explanation and it has to do it very quickly so that we can be sure that the Ho Central Constituency has a credible register for this year's election. We will not accept anything less”, he concluded.
