The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on media outlets and youth organisations to curb the spread of misinformation, which could threaten the integrity of the electoral process.
During the inaugural Civic Festival, the NCCE Chairperson, Kathleen Addy voiced concerns about media outlets potentially promoting false information that could escalate tension and lead to chaos.
"We must prioritize civic education and critical thinking to prevent the spread of misinformation," she said.
Mrs Addy urged the media and youth groups to play a pivotal role in ensuring peaceful and credible elections.
The Civic Fest, held in partnership with the European Union, saw participation from students across 10 senior high schools in Accra.
This initiative aims to educate young people about their civic duties and promote peaceful coexistence during the elections.
The event focused on key issues such as money in politics, violence, and misinformation, equipping students with the tools to engage constructively in the electoral process.
The NCCE Chairperson also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen civic education clubs within schools and bolster inter-party dialogues at the district level.
According to her, these measures are designed to address and resolve political misunderstandings, ensuring that electoral disputes do not escalate into violence or unrest.
As the election date approaches, the NCCE's focus on media responsibility and public awareness is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring a stable and democratic environment.
The NCCE aims to ensure that Ghana’s elections are conducted peacefully and with integrity by fostering informed and active citizen participation.
