The Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education, Mr Larry Bimi has called for an open competition on the knowledge of the constitution between lawyers, politicians and students.
Mr Bimi noted: “One of these days I might challenge the politicians and the lawyers to play the constitution game we introduced for the JSS and SSS I can tell you that my JSS people can beat both our lawyers and politicians in the knowledge of the constitution.”
He said he is dissatisfied at the level of public interest and involvement in its civic education activities.
Speaking to Joy News after a news conference to dismiss accusations leveled against the commission that it has diverted operational vehicles, Mr. Bimi said the Commission has targeted the youth to develop their capacity in civic education.
But Bimi criticized the Ghana Education Service (GES) for refusing to incorporate civic education into its curriculum for basic and secondary schools.
“Nobody can tell me that this country has a civic education agenda. We have been pushing that civic for democracy should be part of the curriculum of this country but nobody is listening to us,” he said.
Mr Bimi said the NCCE has delivered as required of it but the problem lies with the citizens who have not showed much interest in its activities.
“We have instituted the Civic Constitution Week but people don’t seem to be interested in it. Even though everybody is talking about the constitution people are not interested in finding out what we are doing,” he said.
