As Ghanaians prepare to head to the polls tomorrow, the National Peace Council (NPC) has called for collective responsibility in ensuring peaceful elections.
In a video address released today, the Council urged voters, political parties, electoral officials, and security agencies to preserve Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of peace in Africa.
The NPC highlighted the importance of unity, tolerance, and vigilance, cautioning against actions that could jeopardise the country’s stability.
Janet Sarney-Kuma, Director of Capacity Development & Outreach, raised concerns over increasing political polarization.
“If I’m from party A, and another is from party B, we seem to not agree with anything the person says. And sometimes we are not very tolerant amongst ourselves,” she said.
Alexander Koomson, Deputy Director of Research, Monitoring & Evaluation, warned against political exploitation of ethnic and communal tensions, referring to some political actors as “conflict entrepreneurs” who stoke divisions for electoral gains. He emphasized that such actions threaten national cohesion.
Addressing the critical role of youth, Fouzia Issifu, Assistant Programme Manager at the Upper East Regional Peace Council, appealed to young voters to resist political manipulation.
“Do not allow any politician to make you radicalized or involve you in violence. Let’s vote peacefully and return home. One people, one Ghana, peace and love,” she urged.
The NPC’s peacebuilding efforts, while most visible during election seasons, are part of its broader mandate to foster unity across Ghana’s 16 regions.
As polling day approaches, the Council reiterated its optimism for a transparent and peaceful process, stressing the need for all citizens to reject divisive rhetoric and prioritize the nation’s well-being.
