National cycling championship fixed for Saturday

The Ghana Cycling Association will in conjunction with the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports organise a national cycling championship on Saturday, November 7, in Accra. The event which is expected to be a high profile one would have only the highly ranked cyclists on the rankings of the GCA who have been selected to participate. A statement issued and signed by Kwame Amponfi Jr, General Secretary of the GCA, said about 100 cyclists across the country have indicated their desire to participate in the one day event, which starts at the Ministry of Education's Bus Stop and through the principal streets of Accra and back to the starting point. It said eight cyclists and two officials each will represent the Northern, Brong-Ahafo, Ashanti and Volta Regions, whilst Greater Accra Region is being represented by 48 cyclists and 12 officials. According to the statement, six best cyclists will be selected at the end of the championship for residential camping for the first ever West Africa Cycling Peace Tour Championship scheduled for Accra and Lagos, from 19th-20th November, 2009. The six will remain in camp till November 19, after which they will depart for Lagos, Nigeria to be accompanied by four officials. The GCA has therefore appealed to individuals and corporate bodies to support the one day event in cash and kind to ensure a successful National and West African Championship. Source: GNA
