In a thrilling face-off at the Liberty Park in Dansoman, Nasrawa Orisco clinched a 1-0 victory over Agege Shiabu to win the Ursula Cup football competition which was climaxed on Saturday, October 21, 2023.
Post-match, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Member of Parliament for the area, conveyed her gratitude to the teams representing the 10 electoral areas within the constituency for their spirited participation and commendable sportsmanship during the competition.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful underscored the competition's role in fostering unity within the constituency, explaining her motivation for reviving it. She expressed her anticipation for even more intense competition in the upcoming year.
Preferring to host the competition in lieu of a birthday celebration, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, an avid football enthusiast, viewed it as an opportunity to discover and nurture local talent.
The event drew the presence of former national football luminaries including Charles Asampong (Charles Taylor), Peter Ofori Quaye, John Paintsil, Sammy Adjei, Dan Quaye, and Augustine Arhinful.
Capitalizing on the occasion, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, who also serves as the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, urged the youth to engage with the various digital programs initiated by her ministry and the government to enhance their prospects.
Commencing on October 9, 2023, the competition spanned a month and involved 10 communities. As a token of appreciation, all participants received GH₵5,000. The winning team secured GH₵12,000, while the runner-up received GH₵7,000.
'Schemer' Kwabla Kobby, a pivotal player for Nasrawa, attributed their victory to discipline, consistent performance, and superior skills showcased on the day. He expressed gratitude towards Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful for her steadfast support in recognizing and championing sports talent within the constituency.
'Schemer' voiced optimism that some of his teammates might secure professional contracts, having made a lasting impression during the competition.
The tournament featured group stage matches leading up to the final, with ten teams from the constituency competing in a round-robin format.
Augustine Arhinful, former Black Stars captain, chaired the planning committee, aided by Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Polo, ensuring the event's unqualified success.
