NACOB boss denies strike threat

The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) has denied reports that its members have threatened a strike should Government fail to adjust their salaries upwards. The Executive Secretary of the Narcotics Control Board, Robert Ayalingo, stresses that “no one threatened a strike action” and that such reports must be regarded with contempt. Speaking to Citi FM on Tuesday, Mr Ayalingo said officers have been negotiating with Government over their salaries and expressed hope that the issue would soon be resolved. Touching on media reports about a reduction in the volume of illicit drugs in the country, Mr Ayalingo indicated that a regime of improved international collaboration in the fight against drugs has contributed immensely. “Each day there is an arrest of a drug trafficker somewhere,” he said. He said drug peddlers who previously used the country as a transit point have relocated to Nigeria and neighbouring Togo and Ivory Coast, in anticipation of a tougher action against them by the new administration. President Mills at his investiture on January 7, 2009 promised to crack down on illicit drug trade, which reports indicate, has some high ranking officials as perpetrators. With the promise of the newly appointed Police boss, Paul Tawiah Quaye, to give the country’s police force an international outlook, it is expected that the trade will futhur be denied Ghana as a market. Mr Ayalingo promised his team is developing the best strategies to arrest the problem and urged the public not to hesitate in giving tip-offs whenever they are suspicious of any activity.
