The Paramount Chief of the Nandom Traditional Area, Naa Prof. Edmund Nminyem Delle Chiir VIII, at the weekend underscored the critical role of journalism in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.
Chairing the 28th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards, he expressed deep concern over the escalating threats faced by journalists and called for urgent action to protect media practitioners, particularly as the country approaches the 2024 elections.
Naa Delle emphasised that journalism is the "lifeblood of our democracy," and the media’s work in holding governments accountable and amplifying the voices of marginalised communities is indispensable.
However, he lamented the troubling decline in press freedom in Ghana, citing the country’s dramatic fall in the World Press Freedom Index.
Between 2022 and 2023, Ghana dropped from 30th to 60th globally, reflecting an alarming rise in violence, intimidation, and harassment directed at journalists.
"These threats are not just statistics; they are real, palpable dangers that undermine the very foundation of our democratic society," Naa Delle warned.
He highlighted recent reports documenting at least 14 cases of abuse against journalists in Ghana, including arrests and violent attacks, calling for immediate steps to reverse this trend.
Naa Delle also pointed to the financial hardships that journalists face, many of whom work in unsafe conditions and for low wages. These financial constraints, he noted, not only threaten the safety of journalists but also compromise the integrity of the profession.
"Some media houses lack the resources to support their staff adequately, leaving journalists to cover stories using personal equipment and funds," he said, stressing that such conditions make journalists vulnerable to external influence.
As the country heads toward the upcoming elections, Naa Delle reminded the media of its responsibility to uphold fairness, accuracy, and objectivity in its coverage.
He urged political leaders, security agencies, and citizens to create a safer environment for journalists, free from intimidation or retaliation.
In an emotional tribute to the journalists being honoured at the event, Naa Delle hailed them as the "unsung heroes of our democracy," commending their bravery and dedication despite the mounting dangers.
"Excellence is worth the price you may have to pay in the course of your work," he affirmed.
Naa Delle’s address resonated deeply with the audience, setting a poignant tone for the awards ceremony that celebrated 75 years of the GJA’s contribution to journalism in Ghana.
The Multimedia Group swept nine awards at the ceremony- Illegal Mining, Photojournalism, Best Radio Programme (English), Best Feature (Online), Science & Technology, Best Documentary (TV), Best TV Programme (English), Best Sports Reporter, and Best Student Journalist, while Edward Adeti of Media Without Borders was crowned GJA Journalist of the Year 2023.
