JoyNews investigative journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor, has stated that the prestigious Order of the Volta (Membership) Award conferred upon him by President Akufo-Addo would have been more meaningful if the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, had been properly addressed by the government.

The award was given in recognition of his significant contribution to the national development of the country, particularly in the media landscape. Mr Donkor is well-known for his fearless and credible reporting on illegal mining.

He was among several Ghanaians including the outgoing Vice President of Ghana, ministers of State and other outstanding private individuals who were decorated with awards on the day.

Speaking to the media after receiving the award at the 2024 National Honours and Awards in Accra on Monday, December 30, he said, "I think this award would have been more meaningful if the issues I raised, which have earned me several awards, had at least been addressed by this administration."

He continued, "To me, that is the missing link. We still have our major rivers and streams heavily polluted, and this administration has somehow not attached sufficient importance to it, and that hurts."

"I think that is the missing link when it comes to the kind of joy I would have expressed with this award," he added.

Mr Donkor also expressed his gratitude for the recognition and stated that it has motivated him to continue his efforts to make the country a better place for all.
