Anti-corruption campaigner and MP for Essikuma-Odobeng-Brakwa, PC Appiah Ofori has recommended the arrest and immediate prosecution of the two public officials who accused the Sports Minister, Muntaka Mubarak of financial impropriety. Mr. Adim Odoom, an Accountant at the Sports Ministry, and the Chief Director of the Ministry, Albert Ampong are currently on interdiction following a security probe after allegations of corruption against the minister. Investigation by National Security cleared the Minister of all 17 allegations on grounds of lack of evidence by his accusers. But the Minister has subsequently resigned. PC Appiah Ofori maintains that the two officials must be “handed over to the police for prosecution to serve as a strong signal to all public official.” In an interview with Citi FM, the controversial MP argued that the two flouted basic accounting principles, which culminated in the loss of state funds. Even though he admits that the resigned Minister is culpable of some of the allegations made against him, his prosecution, he said, should be at the discretion of the president. "The president can decide to or not to prosecute him," he added. He said the minister flouted portions of the Financial Administrative Act as well as the Criminal Code, all of which caused financial loss to the state. He described as improper the Minister’s acquisition of a visa and tickets for a lady to Germany and Ivory Coast all at the expense of the state. The lady, Edith Zenuela, is said to be Muntaka’s girlfriend, an allegation he has vehemently denied. PC Ofori said he initially did not see why the minister should resign but upon reflection and further evidence adduced, the decision was in the right direction.
