PARMA vs. AC MILAN
Prior to the graceful entrance of the self-proclaimed ‘special one’, Jose Mourinho to the Serie A, Inter-Milan had won the league title three times running with consummate ease. The special one ably guided them to a fourth in his first year in charge (2008-09) but more notably failed in Europe, falling at the one-sixteenth stage to eventual finalist, Manchester United. Roberto Mancini, his predecessor and winner of a hat-trick of league and cup titles for Internazionale was axed for his failings in Europe. Mourinho has improved Inter’s fortunes on the European front culminating in their comprehensive elimination of his former club Chelsea- the first time in three years that the Nerazzurri have gone past the first knockout round.
Ironically success in Europe this year seems to have resulted in an alarming slump in Inter Milan’s form in the Serie A. A ten point lead, 7 weeks ago has been whittled down to 1 by the chasing pack.
At the forefront of this chasing pack is AC Milan. The Rossoneri endured a wretched start to the season under new, relatively inexperienced Coach Leornardo, and have since the 2003-04 season failed to lift the Scudetti. AC Milan, in contrast to their city rivals have thrived in Europe, but fared woefully on the domestic front. They bore the ignominy of being implicated in the match fixing Serie A scandal of 2006 and were docked 15 points the following season as punishment. Their city rivals (Inter) have clearly benefitted most from Milan’s demise, but Leonardo’s men may feel that now is the time to restore some lost pride by reclaiming a title the Rossoneri believe to be theirs.
Milan passed up the chance to overtake Mourinho’s men at the weekend by drawing with Napoli. A win against Parma, this evening is non-negotiable. Coach Leonardo stated as much in his pre-match comments, “I am convinced that we will give everything (in the title race).'' The injured David Beckham will certainly hope they do.
