MTN subscriptions hit 3.4 million

Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN), has increased its subscription base from 2.7 million in 2006 to 3.4 million as at August 2007. Miss Mawuena Dumor, Corporate Services Executive of the Company, who made this known in Kumasi said the company had also installed 1,100 Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) and other upgrading network systems at the cost of $352 million to improve quality of service to subscribers. Speaking to journalists after a tour of three cell-sites of the company in Kumasi on Monday, Miss Dumor said the upgrading and expansion currently going on was aimed at enhancing speech quality, improve coverage intensity and extend coverage to new areas. She said an additional 35 million dollar contract had been signed to speed up the installation of infrastructure, adding that work had already been started in the Greater Accra Region and would soon be extended to the other regions. Miss Dumor said the creation of new cell-sites and the replacement of old equipment at times caused temporary disruptions but said bad weather could also cause disruptions to the network user. Mr Charles Osei-Akoto, Radio and Telecommunications Maintenance Manager, said the company had installed standby generators and batteries at the cell-sites to provide electricity in the event of power failure.
