MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) has celebrated its 15th anniversary in grand style with a launch event in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, where Shaibu Haruna, the CEO of Mobile Money Limited, delivered a speech highlighting the remarkable journey of MoMo and its profound impact on financial inclusion in Ghana.

Fifteen years ago, financial services in Ghana were a privilege for the few, leaving vast segments of the population, particularly in rural areas, excluded from the benefits of the formal banking system. Haruna recounted how MoMo was born out of a vision to democratize access to financial services and empower communities by leveraging mobile technology.

“Our theme for this year’s celebration, ‘Empowering Communities – Celebrating 15 years of Progressive Financial & Digital Inclusion,’ captures the essence of what MoMo represents,” Haruna said. He emphasized that MoMo has evolved from a simple concept of enabling mobile money transfers to becoming an indispensable part of everyday life for millions of Ghanaians.

MoMo's Evolution and Societal Impact

Since its inception, MoMo has grown significantly, aligning with Ghana's rapid adoption of digital payments and e-commerce. Haruna noted that Ghana is now one of the fastest-growing markets in Africa for digital payments, a testament to the convenience and safety MoMo offers.

“MoMo is not just about sending money and making payments anymore,” Haruna explained. “Today, it encompasses a wide array of financial services, including loans, insurance, international remittances, and investments.” This expansion has not only transformed how individuals manage their finances but has also empowered small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to thrive, thereby contributing to economic growth and community development.

Driving Economic and Community Growth

Haruna highlighted the role of MoMo in bridging the gap between the banked and unbanked populations.

He cited numerous examples of how MoMo has facilitated access to essential services such as education and healthcare, improved the quality of life for countless families, and simplified access to government services, including tax and fee payments.

“MoMo has empowered individuals, transformed businesses, and strengthened communities,” Haruna stated. He emphasized that MoMo’s influence extends beyond financial transactions, becoming a platform for broader socio-economic inclusion.

Recognizing Strategic Partnerships

As part of the celebration, Haruna acknowledged the strategic partnerships that have been crucial to MoMo’s success. He expressed gratitude to regulatory bodies, financial institutions, technology partners, agents, merchants, and other stakeholders who have collaborated with MoMo over the years.

“Together, we have navigated challenges, seized opportunities, and driven innovation,” he said, reaffirming MoMo's commitment to fostering these partnerships as it continues to expand its services.

Addressing Challenges and Looking Ahead

While celebrating the achievements of the past 15 years, Haruna also addressed ongoing challenges. He highlighted the persistent coverage gaps in rural areas and the threat of fraud, which continue to hinder MoMo's mission of financial inclusion.

“Fraud remains a significant issue, and we are passionate about combating it,” Haruna declared, urging customers to remain vigilant and protect their personal identification numbers (PINs).

Looking forward, Haruna shared an exciting glimpse of MoMo’s future, with plans to introduce new products, such as loan offerings and an upgraded MyMoMo app. He also announced upcoming activities as part of the MoMo@15 celebrations, including market launches, promotional campaigns, skills training for SMEs, and an awards night to recognize outstanding stakeholders.

A Future of Endless Possibilities

As MoMo enters its next phase, Haruna expressed optimism about the future, envisioning continued innovation and growth in Ghana’s digital payments sector. He underscored the importance of collaborations and partnerships in expanding the digital payments ecosystem, which he believes will create opportunities for all and accelerate socio-economic inclusion.

“Together, let us continue to be dedicated in our commitment to empowering communities and driving inclusive growth,” Haruna concluded, inviting everyone to be part of the ongoing journey to make a difference in the lives of Ghanaians.

The launch in Ho marks the beginning of a series of celebratory activities across the country, reinforcing MTN MoMo’s position as a leader in financial inclusion and digital innovation in Ghana.
