The MTN Group has appointed Mr. Ahmed Farroukh as Group Chief Operating Executive from April this year.
Mr. Farroukh is currently MTN Vice President for the West and Central Africa (WECA) region and a director of MTN Nigeria.
He was the Chief Executive Officer of Spacefon/Areeba, which later became MTN after MTN acquired Investcom in 2006, which owns Scancom, operators Spacefon/Areeba.
Farroukh headed MTN Ghana for a while before moving to Nigeria to be the CEO of MTN Nigeria.
A statement from the group said, in his new capacity, Farroukh will have seven operation CEOs, including MTN Ghana’s Michael Ikpoki reporting to him – the rest are MTN Irancell, Cote d’Ivoire, Afghanistan, Syria, Cameroon and Uganda.
MTN has also created the new position of operations executive, who will be responsible for the rest of the operations such as MTN Cyprus, Guinea-Conakry, Guinea-Bissau, Botswana, Rwanda, Benin, Congo-Brazzaville, Liberia, Sudan, Swaziland, Yemen and Zambia.
The operations executive, who has yet to be appointed, will also report to Farroukh.
The statement from MTN Group said the CEOs of South Africa and Nigeria will report directly to group CEO Sifiso Dabengwa.
