As excitement builds for Ghana’s biggest music night, the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) 2019, which is in a few weeks, the issue of who becomes Ghana’s ‘Artiste of the Decade’ has also escalated.
Among artistes nominated for the ‘Artiste of the Decade’ are Sarkodie, Samini, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, VIP, Ohemaa Mercy, Ruff and Smooth, Okyeame Kwame, Joe Mettle and 4×4.
The VGMA Artiste of the Decade category is honoured every ten years with the 2009 edition going to Kojo Antwi.
But as the race inches closer, Chief Executive Officer of Grater David Hallmark, Mr Logic has said the VGMA 2019 ‘Artiste of the Decade’ list lacks credibility without hiplife musician Guru.
The Artiste manager and media personality has argued that, Nana Yaw Adjei Yeboah Maradona, widely known in Ghana’s entertainment circles as Guru, has had more hit songs in the decade under review than most of the nominees in the category.
The experienced music industry stakeholder said Guru, although young, cannot be denied legendary status when his efforts and the quality of work he has put into his craft over the years are put into perspective, thus making him a force to reckon with.
According to Charterhouse, the 10 nominees are artistes who have had the biggest impact on the music scene within the past decade and Mr Logic believes Guru fits in perfectly.
“Guru is a young legend who has trended over the years and still going stronger year by year,” he stated.
Mr Logic criticised the VGMA board and the academy for the lack of due diligence on their part in coming out with the announced list which he describes as a high mark of falsehood.
The former manager of the late Vybrant Faya expressed his disappointment in the organisers for omitting the NKZ Music boss out of the ‘Artiste of the Decade’ list, saying the omission was sabotage on their part to undermine Guru’s good works over the years or lack of depth in their research.
Mr. Logic, who is also the President of the Songwriter’s Association of Ghana in an interview with Artsgh.com, urged Ghanaians to treat VGMA 2019 ‘Artiste of the Decade’ list as unworthy.
‘How can you have such a category without his involvement? This proves automatically how falsehood is soo much attached to the scheme,’ Mr Logic added.
Guru has always been in the news at every Ghana Music Awards celebration after his song ‘Lapaz Toyota’ failed to win the most popular song of the year under its year of review with Ghanaians blaming the awards scheme of sabotage.
Guru burst onto the music scene in 2008 with a feature on the award-winning rapper and hiplife legend Obrafour’s hit song, ‘Kasiebo’.
His collaboration with Obrafour shot him to fame, making him one of the most successful hiplife artistes in Ghana.
He is famous for his contemporary hiplife rap style that combines English and indigenous languages from Ghana, earning him the title the people’s artiste.
He hails from Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana.
Guru was crowned the ‘Musician of the Year’ at the City People Entertainment Awards Ghana in 2016.
Guru has played on major music concert from all corners of the country and across the globe with back to back hits such as Lapaz Toyota, Alkaeda, Samba, Pooley, Bad Energy, Mpaebo, My Baby and many others.
