The Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Yakubu Imoro says he will make efforts to intervene in the case of the 17-year-old girl, Barkatu Ziblim who is being forced into marriage.
Joy News broke the story of the girl who has been forced to drop out of school by her father to proceed with the marriage.
The girl’s father Mallam Ziblim had claimed that the girl rather ran way and got involved in the marriage secretly, but Barkatu disputes the claim. The Kumbungu MP says though the story of Barkatu is not a common occurrence, opinion leaders such as himself are very concerned about incidences such as forced marriage at the expense of the education of the girl child.
Meanwhile Joy News Northern Regional correspondent, Mahama Shaibu says officials of the Northern Regional Ghana Education Service are scheduled to meet the families involved on Thursday to further discuss the implications of forcing Barkatu to leave school to get married.
The marriage ceremony is fixed for Friday.
