Manchester United new boy Morgan Schneiderlin scored on his debut as his side made a winning start to the International Champions Cup with a single goal victory over Club America at CenturyLink Field, Seattle.
It took just five minutes for Schneiderlin – a £25m signing from Southampton – to make an impact for his new club as he climbed highest to head in a perfectly executed cross from Juan Mata.
He was one of four new signings to make their debut with Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian playing the first-half and Bastian Schweinsteiger one of 11players who emerged for the second period.
But it was the France midfielder who was the brightest aspect for Louis van Gaal’s side on the day, looking cool and composed on the ball and tough in the tackle.
Schweinsteiger was neat and tidy in midfield without making a real impact while it was a fairly quiet match for Dutch star Depay who failed to make an impression. Italian full-back Darmian was rarely troubled.
It was the perfect start for United who are the reigning International Champions Cup champions but the result will not have meant too much to Van Gaal.
He will have been satisfied with his team’s performance, though, especially with the likes of Schneiderlin and Mata who had particularly impressive displays as well as Sam Johnstone - who replaced David De Gea, who was rested as a precaution - in goal.
