The Founding Director of the National Cardiothoracic Center, Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has said Ghana needs to catch up in both acquiring new equipment and training adequate medical professionals.

He pointed out that the technology at the cardiothoracic centre is based on 1980 standards and that the nation has not kept pace with modern developments.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng also noted that it takes a long time to train individuals who can confidently take on responsibilities.

The former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation underscored the importance of investing in both technology and human resources to improve healthcare.

Speaking on JoyNews, ‘The Pulse' with Elton John Brobbey, Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng said, “Training is so important. We need to be training people all the time because it takes a long time to train people who would be confident to take over things. If you have money, you can buy equipment and things within a short time, so we lost a lot of ground, but I think the centre is taking measures to bridge the gap.”

Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng stated that the nation has retrogressed in the health sector. He mentioned that while the government has laid the groundwork to stabilize the situation, there is still a significant need for training people in various areas.

“We do not have enough surgeons, diffusionists, specialized nurses, and cardiologists who can do some of the refined things that are happening in the world today”.
