Mohammed Abu named Stromgodset Player of the Year

Black Stars midfielder Mohammed Abu was named Player of the Year for Norwegian side Stromsgodset on Sunday. It was a bittersweet day for the lad, who is on loan from Manchester City. Now 20 years, Abu was given the honour just before kickoff against Valerenga in the Norwegian top flight. However, his suspension from the previous match meant he did not play as his side won 2-1. The player played his first game for Ghana in the final qualifier against Sudan in October and he has so far racked up 26 appearances for Stromgodset. Abu also featured for the Black Stars against Nigeria in London and played as a second half sub against Gabon a week ago. The Player of the Year gong was keenly contested by two others, including Ghana goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey Larsen as well as Mohammed Keita, a midfielder of Malian ancestry. Prospects SuperSport.com did a special piece on Mohammed Abu in September, where he told us why he was in Scandinavia. “I know I am a good midfielder but when you have players like (Samir) Nasri, (David) Silva and others, you need to think fast,“ Abu had said. “I came from Ghana straight to Manchester City with the confidence to break into the first team someday but I think you´ll agree that I have better chances here at Stroms” He had also spoken about his national team ambitions. “I am 19 years [at the time] with my whole career ahead of me. But when I look at Ghana now I´m aware of the tight competition for places all round” Abu’s immediate target will be hoping to get the nod in Goran Stevanovic’s 23 man squad for Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
