The Minority caucus in Parliament has officially notified the Ghana Police Service of its planned demonstration to demand the resignation of Dr Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), along with his two deputies.
This notification comes in the form of a letter addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Police command by Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central.
In his letter, Mr Ayariga emphasises the caucus's stance on the resignation of not only the Governor and his deputies but also urges for the departure of all current members of the BoG's board.
The protest is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, starting promptly at 8 am and concluding by 6 pm. The chosen venue for this demonstration is in Accra, specifically in the Greater Accra Region.
According to the outlined plan, the protest will commence from Obra Spot located at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
From there, demonstrators will proceed through Adabraka towards Kingsway, culminating their march at the frontage of the Bank of Ghana headquarters.
A key concern highlighted by the Minority caucus pertains to the ongoing construction activities at the BoG's new head office in North Ridge.
This development has sparked considerable apprehension and prompted the caucus to take proactive steps in expressing their dissent through peaceful assembly and protest.
“The Governor of the Central Bank and his board continue to engage in wasteful spending on the new Bank of Ghana Corporate head office building and refuse to answer questions on the latest cost of the building which, we are told, has now further escalated to over $270 million from its original estimated cost of $81,882,640.
“The Governor again has embarked on the construction of a new house for the Governor himself at a speculated cost of $40 million and has refused to disclose to us the actual cost when the Minority wrote to him requesting the information on the cost of the Governor’s house under construction.”
