The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has summoned the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul and Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery over tribal tensions in Kintampo in the Bono East region.
The two ministers are to appear before the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament on Thursday, November 23, to brief the Committee on actions being taken by the government to forestall a clash between the Mo and Wangara tribes in the Kintampo North municipality.
“This is an urgent matter that should be handled with dispatch. I think tomorrow would be okay for the two ministers and their commanders to appear before the committee early tomorrow [Thursday] morning by 9.00 am to brief the committee,” the Speaker directed..
According to the Member of Parliament for the area, Joseph Kwame Kumah, tensions have escalated in his constituency after the Mo tribe requested to perform rituals within the months of November and December, coinciding with the annual Klubi Festival of the Wangara community.
The ritual comes against the backdrop of the killing of eight people at Nkwanta in the Oti Region.
The killing has compelled the National Peace Council to activate a mediation process.
In response to calls for a ceasefire by the MP for Kintampo, the Speaker directed the government to take immediate steps to ensure peaceful coexistence.
He also called on the National Security to intervene in the situation.
He added that if there is the need for the House to move to Kintampo to avert any clashes, the House would do so.
