Firemen at the AngloGold Ashanti North Mine at Obuasi, Ghana, are battling a raging fire said to have engulfed the company's Engineering warehouse.
About 500 miners are said to have been trapped underground at the company's North Mine as a result of the fire.
Power supply from the national grid to the area has been cut, however an official of the company told Joy News that even though there is power at its South Mine, the fire outbreak has made it impossible to send the power to where the trapped miners are.
According to J.S.K. Addai, the fire fighters are doing their best to bring the situation under control.
It was not immediately clear if the trapped miners were in any immediate danger.
Details soon.
