The Executive Director to the Anglican Metropolitan Archbishop of Ghana, Dr George Dawson-Ahmoah, has revealed that a Committee has been set up to investigate the conduct of the Priest seen kissing three students of St Monica’s College of Education, in a viral video.
Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, he explained that the Committee has been tasked to provide a comprehensive report that will inform the next action for both the Church and School.
Dr Dawson-Ahmoah told Aisha Ibrahim on Tuesday that the Priest has already been relieved of his duties in the School, to ensure he does not interfere with the proceedings of the Committee.
“That decision taken by the College of Education is actually in consultation with the Church. The only information that we have is the video. We need to investigate the video, we have identified the personalities in the video and we need to interrogate them."
"So now all powers have been given to the Investigating Committee to come up with their comprehensive report and that will determine the action we will take,” he added.
Dr Dawson-Ahmoah stated that the Committee is made of the leadership of the Anglican Church and some leaders from the School.
This comes after a video, in which a Priest is seen kissing some students at St Monica’s College of Education in Asante Mampong in the Ashanti Region, went viral.
In the amateur footage, the Priest, Father Balthazar Obeng, is seen kissing three female students before a cheering congregation.
However, the third lady seemed unwilling but eventually gave in to be kissed.
The Anglican Priest at the centre of the kissing controversy was later relieved of his duties.
This formed part of the conclusions at a crunch meeting convened by school authorities in Asante Mampong over the incident.
Tuesday’s decision comes amid calls from the public and civil society organisations for the Chaplain’s head.
Dr Dawson-Ahmoah said on The Pulse that both institutions - the Church and the School, attach great importance to the situation and hope to get it resolved as soon as possible.
“Within 24 hours the Church has come up with a press release, followed up with a setting up of Committee, followed up with suspension and that should show you the speed with which we want this matter to be resolved. It is going to be as soon as practicable,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Anglican Church of Ghana expressed its dissatisfaction about the matter in a press release.
An August 17 statement indicated that “the said Priest will be dealt with in accordance with the norms and values of the Anglican Communion where morality is extremely revered in the Church.”
Also, the education think tank, Africa Education Watch, has demanded that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) investigates the matter and apply sanctions where necessary.
