The disciplinary committee of the Methodist Church dealing with allegations of rape against its administrative bishop met Wednesday, Joy News has learnt.
The outcome of the meeting is however unknown.
The administrative bishop, Right Reverend Kow Bosomefi Egyir, is alleged to have raped the 23-year-old daughter of a colleague bishop after which he sought refuge in the United States.
He was due to appear before a disciplinary panel on 3 February but he didn’t turn up. Instead, sources say, he has been communicating with the committee by phone to state his case.
Joy News reporter Yaa Asamoah who has been following the case said the bishop’s alleged act has raised so many eyebrows within the church.
Jacob Osei Yeboah, one of the elders of the Methodist Church, has been angered over what he says is the church’s attempt to shield the accused.
“This case has been an eye opener for all of us. Looking at the bigger picture, what I’m thinking of is that, may be we need to lobby Parliament and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that at least we have a legislative instrument in guiding us as to what the citizenry ought to do in issues of rape in our nation,” Elder Yeboah lamented.
According to him, the church has remained mute over the issue because of the status of the bishop in the society.
“Because it involves a big man in our society, all of us are afraid to talk about it and so we dignify the indignity in our society.”
Mr Yeboah suggests the police service encourages victims of rape to report such abuses for prosecution.
