John Mensah looks set to return to Sunderland with Steve Bruce revealing he has reached an agreement with Olympique Lyon to take the Ghanaian defender on loan for another season.
Mensah had earlier turned down a pay-as-you play offer from Sunderland but the two clubs have reportedly reached an agreement and the man who captained Ghana at the 2010 World Cup will head back to the north of England for his second season in the premiership. Sunderland and Lyon will share Mensah’s £25,000 a week wage.
He will be hoping the second season will be a vast improvement on the first when he spent more time in the treatment room than on the pitch due to a recurring back injury.
When he is fit though, Mensah has proved a solid defender and Bruce is delighted to have him again.
Bruce said: "I love John as a player, you couldn't ask for a better defender. He's Champions League class."
