Men must be bonded-E/R women

Women in the Eastern Region have called on the Government to institute "stringent measures" to bind men to spend part of their income on their children to alleviate the burden of women. In an eight-point communiqué issued at the end of a regional women’s forum organised at Asamankese by the National Council on Women and Development (NCWD), the women also asked the government to provide subsidies and other inputs through its appropriate agencies, to women in agriculture since women generally do not find collaterals for bank loans. The communiqué said it behoves district assemblies to create desks for women and use it to train women on basic business management of their micro and medium entrepreneurships. It said for education to impact more positively on the girl-child in village communities, more trained teachers should be posted to these areas to help in raising their levels of education. Non-formal education should be made accessible to every nook and cranny of the Eastern Region to benefit women, it said. The communiqué noted that taxes on trading are too many and unbearable, adding that this may kill their businesses. Susana Mensah, Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, addressing the forum advised women to forge ahead in unity and fight for their common good. "We should fight alongside our men to reach the top, as every enlightened and educated woman can perform better wherever she finds herself," she said. Source: The Ghanaian Times
