The National Media Commission has proposed a monitoring system on the performance of media houses as a determinant for the continuous operation of media organizations. If the proposal is adopted, it will require a re-registration of newspapers and radio stations. The commission is hoping that the new system will adequately regulate the media and ensure high journalistic standards. The Commission’s proposal comes in the wake of complains of widespread lack of professionalism in the media. Speaking at the end of a two-day conference on Media and National Development in Accra the Executive Secretary of the media Commission, George Sarpong said the proposal is an alternative to what seems a possible legislation to control the media. Mr. Sarpong said after a one year probation period of a newspaper or radio station, the monitoring team will decide, based on performance, whether the media house will stay or have its license revoked. He is also proposing what he calls the Professional Performance Index, which will be a peer review mechanism among editors and a Credibility Performance Index to be scored by readers and listeners as most likely workable approaches. Mr. Sarpong is also calling for a debate on the establishment of a media development fund to support media organizations. He’s proposing that access to the fund be based on reports submitted by the monitoring team.
