Media asked to highlight private sector

The media has been advised to articulate concerns of the private sector to promote private business to generate income for development in the country. The media’s support in terms of advocacy and wider coverage of the private sector would also help to eradicate poverty in Ghana. Mr Bright Blewu, General Secretary of Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA) gave the advice at the opening of a three-day Training Workshop in Business Advocacy for some selected media personnel in Ashanti Region on Monday. The workshop is to equip Journalists with skills and knowledge to support the private sector business in undertaking actions to improve the environment within which they operate. It would also enable Journalists learn about the business sector and improve their knowledge of public policy process at the national and district levels. Mr Blewu noted that there had been several interventions by the media to promote the private sector including the workshop. He called on the media to champion the cause by promoting the sector since the media could also create wealth and generate income for development. Mr Blewu stressed that Journalists would benefit from upgrading their knowledge and improve in the coverage of business financing and advocacy. Mr Akwasi Afriyie Badu, Chief Executive of KAB Business Consult, commended GJA for its efforts to promote private sector advocacy. He appealed to managements of media houses to distinguish between understanding of what should be advertised and what should be business when granting coverage. Mr Kofi Asante Frimpong, Director for National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), called for comprehensive and coherent policy to promote the sector. He called on the media to associate their duties with advocacy to ensure that issues were explained properly to the public for them to understand the private sector. Mr Kwame Buor, Ashanti Regional Chairman of Association of Small Scale Industries (ASSI), said ASSI and GJA had in the past two years collaborated to promote and accelerate development of the informal sector in the region. Mr Buor suggested that some government policies such as trade liberalization policies should be reviewed to reduce the influx of foreign goods into the country. He appealed to Government to create a business atmosphere devoid of fear and institute measures to ensure collaboration of both private and public sector to enhance development. Source: GNA
