Minister for the Interior Ambrose Dery has assured that measures have been put in place to end the recurrent riots on some university campuses in the country.
This year, violent clashes have been reported on the campuses of the University of Ghana (UG) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) that led to the destruction of properties and injuries.
The Minister, in an interview aired on Joy FM's Midday News on Friday, explained that adequate security patrols will be in place on public university campuses to avert a recurrence of such incidents.
He added that the patrol teams would also respond to any emergency security situation.
“There is the need to provide a safe, secure, congenial atmosphere within our public universities and schools,” he said.
Mr Dery said the presence of Police in public schools has increased.
“More plain-clothed Police personnel have been deployed for surveillance and intelligence gathering purposes,” he added.
The Interior Minister also condemned unwarranted attacks on citizens by some Police officers, describing such conduct as “unprofessional and unacceptable.”
"The Police administration frowns upon such conduct. It is pertinent to note that the duty and responsibility of Police in any mob or riot situation is to maintain law and order while observing international policing practices. In the midst of riot control, the Police always ensure the right of the rioters are not infringed upon,” he said.
He announced that officers who attack citizens have been dealt with in line with Police regulations.
