The second edition of the annual McDan Open championship takes off today after a successful qualifiers last weekend.
The country’s tennis governing body, Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) has hinted that the main draw of the competition begins today at the Accra Stadium Tennis Court.
Close to 100 participants are expected in the five day tennis fiesta which has doubled the prize moneys dole out by title sponsor McDan Group of Companies in all categories.
Executive Chairman of the McDan Group of Companies, Daniel McKorley has said ahead of the competition that: "All of us can’t support football or boxing, we realized the country is blessed with more sporting talents, and as a tennis fun, we decided to support tennis.
“Besides we considering it as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility program, we see it as providing a great platform foe the the participants to showcase their God given talents.
“We hope the competition will grow as the years roll by. It is the reason we have doubled the prize moneys so the level of competition will move a step ahead.
“ Next year, we will extent this to the West African sub region and we want our players to overcome all the opposition from the likes of Togo Cote d'Ivoire and
Burkina Faso who also do very well in tennis.”
The five-day tourney which will end on Saturday is being sponsored by the McDan Group and supported by The Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), AfWest Security, Automedics, Babolat and the Platinum Sports Channel.
