Real Madrid and France forward, Kylian Mbappé has expressed deep gratitude to his former international teammate, Antoine Griezmann, following his decision to retire from the French national team.

This comes after the Los Colchoneros forward announced his retirement from international football.

Announcing his retirement in a video on social media, the 33-year-old said; "It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent tricolour adventure and see you soon."

"After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation.

"Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege," he added.

In light of this, Mbappé in a heartfelt post acknowledged the veteran forward's immense contributions to the team over the years.

“An exceptional player ending his career in EDF. One of the most important players in the modern era of our national team," Mbappé wrote on Monday, September 30.

"Thank you for the unforgettable memories you have given us, you carried this team for years and greatly contributed to bringing it to the top with many titles."

The Los Blancos forward also recognised that some might believe it is too early for Griezmann to step away from international football, but expressed his understanding and respect for the decision.

He added, "Wearing this shirt always demands more without sometimes bringing the recognition that comes with it. You will remain in the history of the French team forever."

Reflecting on their time playing together, Mbappé noted that it was an "honour and pleasure" to share the pitch with Griezmann for so many years and that he never took it for granted.

He said, "I never trivialised it. Have a safe trip my friend & THANK YOU.”

The Atletico Madrid player made 137 appearances for his country, scoring 44 goals, and helped them win the 2018 World Cup, converting a penalty in the final as France beat Croatia 4-2 in Moscow.

He also won the 2021 Nations League with his country.
