Maritime workers educated on HIV/AIDS

The National Chairman of the Maritime and Dockworkers Union (MDU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mr Rexford Richard Amponsah, on Tuesday observed that frontier workers at the borders could become facilitators in the educational programmes on the HIV/AIDS pandemic. He said since dockworkers are the first line of contact with visitors to the country, their knowledge on HIV/AIDS would be effective, and could go a long way in helping to reduce the pandemic. Mr Amponsah was opening a three-day HIV/AIDS educational programme for 45 union workers to help broaden their knowledge on the pandemic. He said the disease was real and urged the participants to be faithful to their partners to avoid contracting the disease. Mr Kwabena Owusu Afriyie, General Secretary of the Union said the training programme, which is the third in a series, is under the auspices of the Ghana Aids Commission. He said so far the educational programme has gone well with workers and there are indications that it was having an impact on many workers. Source: GNA
