Manchester United defender Wes Brown is set to have a medical at Sunderland.
The Black Cats had a joint bid for more than £12m for Brown, fellow defender John O'Shea and midfielder Darron Gibson accepted in June.
Brown, 31, signed his first professional contract at Old Trafford in 1996 and has made 361 appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.
The England international has travelled to Wearside and could finalise the move on Wednesday.
Brown, who made his United debut in 1998, has won two Champions League titles, five Premier League winners' medals, two FA Cups and two League Cups with the Red Devils.
However, the Da Silva twins, Fabio and Rafael, are above him in the pecking order to play at right-back and the arrival of Phil Jones alongside central defenders Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling suggests that opportunities to play first-team football next season could be limited.
Brown could be joined at the Stadium of Light by O'Shea, 30, but progress in a deal for the Republic of Ireland international has been stalled as his wife has given birth since Sunderland's bid was accepted.
The future of Gibson, 23, is less clear, with Newcastle also showing an interest.
Meanwhile, Sunderland chief executive Steve Walton as well as marketing and commercial director Lesley Callaghan are both to leave the club.
