Manchester City reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time courtesy
of a 0-0 draw at home to Dynamo Kiev, sealing a 3-1 aggregate victory. However, the win came at a cost, with centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi both going off injured.
City went into the game with a 3-1 lead from the first leg and looked in complete control throughout a first half that lacked anything even resembling a chance at either end. And a subdued atmosphere at the Etihad wasn’t helped by Kompany pulling up with a muscle injury just five minutes into the game. The City captain was stony-faced as he left the field, and he was joined in the changing rooms shortly afterwards by fellow centre-back Otamendi with what looked like a less serious injury.
Dynamo needed three goals to avoid a European exit and threw on an extra striker for the second half, but it was City who created the game’s better chances, with Sergio Aguero shooting narrowly wide and Jesus Navas striking the post with a low drive.
The celebrations at full-time were muted, but this result heralds a new dawn for Manchester City, who now wait for Friday’s quarter-final draw to see who they face in the last eight of the competition.
