Management of ASTA FM condemns NDC ‘hooligans’

We, the Board of Directors, the management and staff of ASTA FM Radio in Techiman, B/A; vehemently condemn and protest against the act of hooliganism which has been and continue to be exhibited on Panelists of our Political Programmes, by some sympathizers and supporters of the NDC. ASTA FM is a recognized Radio Station which works within the frame work of media and Communication Laws prescribed by the Ghana Constitution and National Communication Authority. “Asem Yi Dika” and Week-end News Review as well as “Kokrokoo”; hooked from Peace Fm in Accra, are authenticated programmes run purposely for Political Parties to highlight the parties ideology, achievement, and failure, in relation to news publications for the populace to discern and make correct selection of the country’s Political Leaders and governance. Every Political Party within the catchment area of ASTA FM can send a representative to participate in the Programme all the time. These programmes have been handled with non-partisan stand, fairness and firmness by our prolific Presenters. It is no doubt that such programmes should bring about confrontations, arguments, rancours and sometimes brawls. But it has been observed that, some members and sympathizers of the Ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have taken an advantage of these to humiliate and terrorize other political representatives especially the New Patriotic Party (NPP) On Wednesday, 31st of March, 2010, after one of such programmes, Messrs Abu Sadick and Bonbisman, NDC activists attacked Mr. Everson Addo, NPP representative on the programme, on the grounds that he Mr. Everson Addo had insinuated the Techiman MCE. This led to the suspension of the Programme by the ASTA Authority. But through the amicable settlement and undertakings by all the Political Parties concerned, the programme resumed. In order to promote ASTA FM for general exposure, the Authority has acquired the Conference Hall of the Encom Hotel - Techiman from where the Week-End News Review Programme is broadcast live with effect from 10th September, 2011. This gives opportunity for the General Public to participate personally instead of by Telephones. On Saturday, 8th October, 2011, the programme as usual came off at the Encom Hotel from 8:00 -10:00am. Among the participants who contributed to the programme were Madam Laurencia Owusu, an NPP activist and Mr. Atta an NDC activist. Ironically, Mr. Atta ambushed and beat up Madam Laurencia Owusu few metres away from the Programmes’ spot at the tail end of the programme, a case pending before the Techiman Municipal Police. In view of the above, ASTA FM stands on this release and states that; (1) The above incidents should be condemned by all, irrespective of political, social or religious affiliation. (2) We urge the leaders of all Political Parties especially the ruling NDC to control their members to desist from such acts which can lead to mayhem in the municipality. (3) The programme shall continue with the same objectives and modalities. (4) The NDC as a Party should undertake to be liable for any inactions before, during and after the Programmes. (5) We employ the Security Services and Opinion Leaders to treat such incidents with the uttermost attention and contempt as defined in the Constitution without fear or favour. (6) We express our deepest sympathy to the victims involved in the incidents in particular and NPP in general. (7) ASTA FM will stop the participation of any political Party whose members indulge in such act and dispel its representative from the programme without further deliberations. Thanks. J. O. Asante General Manager
