A 20-year-old former student of the Nsutam senior Technical School in the Eastern Region has been sentenced to three years in prison in hard labour by a Koforidua Circuit Court, for stealing an automatic weapon from the Bunso Police Station.
The student, Abraham Kwadwo Asomaning, allegedly entered the police station in the night, clubbed the policeman on duty, Sergeant A.K. Dzameshie, on the head into unconsciousness.
Thereafter, he broke into the station officer’s office and made away with a sub-machine gun (SMG) No.11102, a Nokia mobile phone, a Sonica video compact disc (VCD) player and a DVD deck.
The court heard that earlier, Amaning, aided by an accomplice, Isaac Offoe, now at large, switched off the mains thus plunging the police station area into total darkness.
Passing sentence, the judge, Mrs Dories Bempong, condemned the rising crime wave in the country mostly perpetuated by the youth.
Prosecuting, Inspector P. Sackitey told the court that on November, 23, 2007, Sgt. A.K. Dzameshie was on a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. duty at the Bunso Charge Office as the last out counter non-commissioned officer.
He said that at about 10.30 p.m. Sgt Dzameshie was attacked by Kwadwo Asomaning and Isaac Offoe after they had switched off the main meter.
Inspector Sackitey said the convict, taking advantage of the darkness, sneaked into the charge office and clubbed the officer on duty on the head into unconsciousness.
He said Asom- aning and his accomplice Offoe, then entered the station officer’s office and took away the aforementioned items.
Inspector Sackitey said the convict was later arrested and when his room was searched, all the said items except the Nokia mobile phone were found and retrieved.
Meanwhile, the police have launched a manhunt for Offoe.
