Man, 25, jailed 25 years for robbery

A Kumasi High Court, presided over by Justice Amoah, has sentenced a 25-year-old man, Abdallah Mutawakilu, to 25 years imprisonment in hard labour for robbery. Presenting the facts of the case in court, a State Attorney, Kyei Baffour Brentuoh said in the middle of January this year, Naomi, the complainant was attacked at gunpoint by Mutawakilu near the foot bridge at the Adum Railway Yard and was asked to surrender her mobile phone and cash or face instant death. He said Naomi surrendered her phone and later reported the case to her brother, describing her attacker vividly to him: Mr Brentuoh noted that two weeks later, after a thorough search, Mutawakilu was spotted around the scene of the robbery and when he was confronted by Naomi's brother, he took to his heels. The prosecutor added that on March 16, this year, the convict was spotted at the Railway Crossing at Fante New Town where he was arrested and handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID). He was later identified by the victim during an identification parade. Mr Brentuoh stated that at the close of the prosecution's case, the court held that it had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court consequently imposed the 25 year sentence on him. There was jubilation outside the premises of the court when sentence was passed, with most people saying that they could now have some respite to go about their lawful business, since Mutawakilu had been a thorn in their flesh for a very long time but had always escaped from the grips of the law. According to Mr Brentuoh, the convict had another case of robbery pending at the High Court. Source: Daily Graphic
