On Saturday, October 5, 2024, the Maltiti Foundation, led by its founder Hajj Fawzie, organised a breast screening and general healthcare consultation at Videoland, a suburb of Nima in Accra, Ghana.
The charity event was held in commemoration of Pink Friday, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer and encouraging early detection through regular check-ups.
Speaking to the media, Hajj Fawzie, an entrepreneur and advocate for children and women’s welfare, urged all participants to prioritize their health.
“Men can also be affected by breast cancer, so it is essential for everyone, regardless of gender, to take this seriously and seek medical attention when necessary,” she said.
During the event, an average of 500 people were screened by doctors and nurses present for breast cancer and other health concerns. Those with complications were referred to the nearest health facilities for further treatment. The event’s success was made possible through the collaboration of Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim and the Dan Yaro Sports Injury and Rehabilitation Centre in Nima.
Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide, with about 2.3 million new cases reported annually, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
In Africa, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. Ghana is no exception, with approximately 4,000 new cases diagnosed each year, making early screening and intervention critical in reducing the mortality rate.
The Assembly representative for the area, Honourable Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, expressed his gratitude to the Maltiti Foundation for returning to Nima for another impactful event. He referenced the foundation’s previous visit in 2019, when it provided relief items during the COVID-19 crisis.
Maltiti Foundation’s next charity project is set to take place from October 7 to 10, 2024, in Banda, located in the Oti Region. The initiative will provide hundreds of women and children with breast cancer screenings and general healthcare services, furthering the foundation’s commitment to improving health outcomes across Ghana.
