Mr Mark Woyongo, Upper East Regional Minister has called on the Catholic Church and stakeholders in education to make the content of education relevant to current circumstances and aspirations of the nation.
He made the call at the opening of the 29th Annual National Conference of the Heads of Catholic Higher Institutions (AHCHI) on Friday at the Saint John Bosco's Training College in Navrongo.
Mr Wayongo said the discovery of oil required the development of the necessary manpower with basic skills and knowledge to handle the operations of the oil and petrol chemical industry.
Whilst commending the Catholic Church for the tremendous role it played in the development of education, Mr Wayongo urged it not to be complacent but to endeavour to do more to meet the demands of the highly competitive global village.
He said under the directives of state policy of the fourth Republican Constitution of Ghana, the state and for that matter the government had been mandated to provide educational facilities at all levels and in all regions of Ghana.
Mr Wayongo said with the limited resources of the country, it would become difficult for the government alone to shoulder the responsibility.
He said the government recognized the role churches played in the development of education hence its acceptance of the proposal by the Catholic Bishop’s Conference not to eliminate religious and moral education in the School Curriculum.
Mr Wayongo said the present government would not relent in its efforts to build consensus and consult with stakeholders in education to address issues confronting it.
He explained that government would overhaul the educational system to make graduates acquire employable skills to become more productive in order not to rely on government for employment.
